Introduction
Why affiliate traffic does not pay off: 8 reasons and procedure for diagnosis
When a campaign fails, the most useless wording is “traffic is bad.” She doesn't explain anything. The partner has a chain of several stages: display or search query → click → landing → registration → target action → confirmation → further value of the user. Failure can occur at any site, and everyone needs their own check.
Below is not a rating of “best partners” and not a promise of earnings. This is a diagnostic scheme that helps us understand where the economy is being lost.
1. The source does not match the proposal
The same number of clicks from two channels can have completely different value. The user from the search query has already formulated the need, and the user from the entertainment tape could go out of curiosity. Therefore, the CTR cannot be measured separately from the next step.
| Situation | What's in the report? | Check it out. |
|---|---|---|
| Lots of clicks, few registrations | High interest in the announcement, weak transition | Conformity of creative landing, page speed, GEO |
| Registration is enough, FTD is not enough | The user started the journey but did not complete it. | understandability of the next steps, localization, availability of the scenario |
| FTD is there, confirmation is weak | The volume is, the quality is disputed | source, offer rules, antifraud, doubles |
| CPA converges, but scale breaks the economy | grows more expensive | New Segments, Frequency, Creative Burnout |
2. Mixed campaigns
If several platforms, GEOs and creatives share one tag, the average hides the cause of the result. A minimally useful breakdown is source, GEO, campaign and creative. For paid traffic, record costs at the same level of detail.
3. Partner optimizes the wrong metric
Cheap clicks are not a goal in themselves. A high CTR does not guarantee anything either. The metric should correspond to the funnel stage. For landing, click → registration is more important, for traffic – the cost and quality of the confirmed action, for RevShare – the dynamics of NGR and retention by cohorts.
4. Waiting and landing diverge
If the ad promises one thing and the user sees another after the click, some traffic is lost regardless of the click price. Compare title, main benefit, language, currency context, and first screen. Don’t try to compensate for a discrepancy with a more aggressive CTA.
5. Offer rules not agreed
Prior to launch, valid sources, GEO, definition of paid action, KPI, hold, cap, and attribution rules must be understood. Otherwise, one side considers the action valid and the other does not. This is not a “conversion” problem, but a campaign-staging problem.
6. Scaling started too early.
Increasing the budget before there is a stable breakdown often breeds error. First, it is useful to get a clear volume for one segment, then change one large variable at a time. If you simultaneously expand the GEO, replace the creative and increase the rate, the source of the change in the result will be impossible to determine.
7. They only watch for one day.
For a small campaign, daytime fluctuations can be stronger than the actual effect. Compare comparable periods and cohorts. Do not infer from a single spike, especially if the number of targeted actions is small.
8. No report of its own.
Affiliate statistics are necessary, but it is useful to have your own data layer: date, source, SubID, expense, clicks, registrations, confirmed actions and income. Such a report helps to quickly notice the discrepancy and not argue at the level of sensations.
30 minute check-in procedure
- Separate the data by source and GEO.
- Find the weakest transition in the funnel.
- Compare it to the previous comparable period.
- Check that tags and postbacks work the same on all steps.
- Look not only at the volume, but also at the proportion of confirmed actions.
- Set one hypothesis for the next test.
For the calculation of models can be used calculators and for a more detailed inspection of the crater, the material on click → registration → FTD.
