What is called burnout?

Creativity burns out when a significant part of the available audience has already seen a message enough times and ceases to react to it. But the decline in results is not always due to this. Rising competition, changing auction prices, or landing issues may look similar.

Combination

Metrica.Possible burnout signal
Frequencygradually growing
CTRdecrease
CPCIt grows with or with a similar CPM.
Cost per FTDworsening
Post-click CRIt can remain relatively stable.

If the CTR falls, but the post-click CR does not change, the probability of the problem is higher at the level of creativity. If the CTR is stable, and registration → FTD has fallen sharply, it is worth looking for a reason further down the funnel.

Why “making a new banner” is not enough

If the new version repeats the same visual plot and the same text, the audience may perceive it as an old message. You need to update not only the design, but also the angle of communication.

Four Ways to Update Hypothesis

  1. Change the main argument.
  2. Change the presentation format.
  3. Reassemble the first seconds of the video.
  4. Divide the audience and talk to the segments differently.

How not to lose a winning experience

Don't delete old data. Note when creativity began to deteriorate, what frequency it reached, and what variant replaced it. Over time, you can see the average life span of different formats.

When you don’t need to change creativity

If the problem appears immediately after a landing page change or technical integration, check them first. The timing is an important clue.

A broader testing framework is described in the article How to Compare Creative Ideas.

Frequency is a clue, not a universal threshold.

You can’t say that a creative person always dies after a specific number of impressions per person. Different formats and audiences get tired at different speeds. Watch the dynamics: how the CTR and the cost of the result change with the increase in frequency of this campaign.

Update the package in advance

If a new creative begins to draw only after a failure, the campaign inevitably spends part of its time in a weak state. It is better to keep the turn of ready-made hypotheses and enter the next one until the current one burns out completely.

Distinguish audience burnout from idea burnout

Sometimes, the same creativity works again in a new segment. That means the problem was saturating the audience, not the idea itself. In another case, the new audience also reacts weaker – then it is necessary to change the communication angle.

Post-replacement comparison

Estimate not only the CTR of the new version, but also the cost of the confirmed result. A refreshed visual may get attention again, but if post-click quality gets worse, the update didn’t solve the business problem.

Segment fatigue

The overall CTR may fall because one large segment burns out while the other still responds normally. Look at the frequency and the results by audience. Sometimes it is enough to update the creative only for a saturated segment.

Rotation should not be accidental.

Determine in advance which ideas are next. If the system automatically rotates many similar options, this does not guarantee a meaningful update. Rotation should include really different messages.

After a pause.

Old creativity can be retested after a change in audience or a significant break, but it is not automatically “fresh.” Use a separate version of the campaign and compare it to the current controls.
